Saving a Clinton landmark from a slam-dunk demolition.
Demolition of the James Q. Allen Gym doesn’t have to be a Slam Dunk!
Save the Gym. Send your letter of support before May 12th!
At a recent meeting of the Clinton School Board, the James Q. Allen Junior High School Gym (a Clinton landmark built in 1948) was designated for demolition.
The Clinton School Board has graciously agreed to temporarily suspend the demolition of the gym. They are working with The Mississippi Department of Archives and History to determine our community’s interest in preserving the old gym and the viability of such a project.
Both the School Board and the Department of Archives and History have asked those interested in the preservation and renovation of our historic gym to notify them in writing.
If you are one of the many who want to see other options for this wonderful, but flagging, piece of Clinton history take the time to let your voice be heard. Your letter will not guarantee the survival of the structure, but your voice added to many voices just might make it happen.
The goal is not to have the old gym stand vacant and unused for another dozen years, but to aggressively pursue options within the community (and in cooperation with the School Board) to make it a viable part of civic life in Clinton.
Your ideas are welcome. Your letters are crucial.
Your participation in the visioning process would be a gift.
Here's how you can help:
